In Jail for a DUI:
Do you want to spend the weekend in Jail? Most people would say no to this questions. Yet, I always see same people drinking and driving. If you have a loved one who got arrested and is now in jail, call the #1 bail bonds company in Van Nuys, Big Boy Bail Bonds, Inc. As a bail bondsmen, I have become more and more forgiving when it comes to the mistakes people make. But one that always hits me in a soft spot is the most common mistake people make: drinking and driving. I have posted many bonds for people who have been arrested for drunk driving. And even ones that caused death. But no matter what or how the story ends, it was never worth the pain it causes you and your loved ones.
Most people find it very hard to forgive when you get arrested or hurt someone due to drinking and driving. Mostly because everyone knows drinking and driving is wrong. No matter how drunk you are, you know that you should not drink and drive. You will either get in trouble or hurt someone! Each time I post a bail bond on a client that has been arrested for drunk driving yhe number one thing they say to me is, “I wish I just called a cab”. When you decide to drink and drive (DUI), you are putting yourself and others in harm’s way and maybe even death. I understand that people work very hard all day everyday and at the end of the week a few drinks might be well deserved. But when you have more than one drink it is time to call a cab. What I don’t understand is people are willing to spend $15 on one drink, but not $45 on a cab to ensure they make it home safe. A taxi provides you the comfort of making it home safe and sleeping on your own bed, versus sleeping on a jail bench next to someone who is most likely coming off drugs or throwing up on the floor next to your feet.
A DUI Usually Means Bad Decision Making
Yet I still see people get into their cars and drive home. This is a DUI, and it is against the law. Do not drink and drive, unless you really are intent on spending the night in jail. Each time someone decides to drink and drive they are risking their life with a chance of risking someone else’s life as well. When someone tells me that they got arrested for drunk driving my first question is, did you get in to an accident? If they were lucky they got arrested before getting in to a accident. I let them know how happy they should be. They should thank the police officers that arrested them because most likely they just saved their life and the lives of others.
Normally when I tell someone they were so lucky to have gotten arrested they dont understand why I would say something like that and sometimes even think it is a rude thing to say. When I explain to them that if they had hurt someone, even if the accident was not their fault, the jail sentence is four years in prison. Then they understand why they were lucky to have gotten arrested. I understand that no one wants to spend the weekend in jail. The good news is you never have to, all you have to do is hire a taxi driver. We’re fortunate that taxi drivers, UBER, and LYFT work 24 hours a day. By hiring a driver you will not only go home to your lovely bed but you might have saved your life or someone else’s life.
A DUI charge in California is $5,000 bond that is actually a small bond amount for California. That doesn’t include all the fees you will have to pay. The fees for a DUI charge will run all the way up to $7,000 and a license suspension for up to one year. Now if you for some reason decide you are going to drink and drive and get into an accident the bond amount is $100,000. That is a huge jump from the original $5,000 for a DUI without a accident. If your bond is $100,000 and you get approved for a 8% bond your fee will be $8,000 and if you’re approved for a 10% bond then your fee will be $10,000. I do not wish this on anyone. Recently one of my former clients had a few drinks and got into a four car accident on the freeway. Unfortunately someone passed away. The accident was not his fault, it was the fault of the first car who had car trouble without warning. My client was the third car in the accident and the only one who had a few drinks. His case went on for almost three years until he finally had to serve a jail sentence of four years. If you kill someone while under the influence, you will serve a long jail sentence regardless of whether you have ever been in jail or even been arrested.
People found guilty of driving under the influence (DUI) should expect the book to be thrown at them by the courts. While everyone makes mistakes the authorities are less tolerant of certain “mistakes” with DUI being near the top of their list. The best way to avoid a DUI is to not drink and drive.
